A Step-by-Step Guide to Filling Cracks With Epoxy Resin

Step 1: Prepare the Wood Surface

When working with resin and wood, cleaning the wood's surface using a brush or compressed air is necessary. Dust, oils, or previous finishes can hinder the epoxy's adhesion to the wood. Ensure you wear a respirator mask during this process.

Step 2: Inspect & Clean the Crack

Examine the crack to prep it for an effective fill-up. Remove any debris, dust, or any remaining finish from the crack.

Step 3: Seal the Crack Edges with Tape

Before applying resin or epoxy, tape off the backside of the wood to prevent epoxy from seeping through the cracks and holes. Use painter's tape or acetate to seal the backside securely.

Step 4: Mix & Tint Your Epoxy Resin

Epoxy resin consists of two components: resin and hardener. Mixing them in the correct proportions is pivotal to obtaining the right consistency.   • Be patient since epoxy adhesion can take a few hours or days. 
  • Once the epoxy is fully cured, sand the epoxy-filled cracks. Start with rough-grit sandpaper before progressing to finer grits for a smooth, polished appearance.
  • To provide additional protection, apply a seal or final flood coat after the initial epoxy has cured.

Significant damages may require sanding down the damaged area, cleaning, and preparing the wood for a reapplication.
